On New Years Eve we did not have a lot planned. We had decided to take it easy that day and just hang around Queenstown. We went down to town for lunch and then walked around for a bit. The day prior I had scheduled a ride on the Hydro Attack. The Hydro Attack is a custom built frame that’s shaped like a shark. It’s powered by a high performance wave runner engine and capable of diving up to 3 feet under the surface of the water. The engine gets air from it’s “fin” on top so you can’t go any deeper than that.
I got set up with a life vest the self inflates when it gets wet (that’s a first). I then jumped in the back seat of this beast after my request to be the pilot was quickly denied. The interior feels (I imagine) like a jet fighter. It’s a very tight squeeze and I could barely see around the pilot in front of me with my head pushed to the side. The driver took us out into the open water and then turned it loose! We were doing hard banks left to right, and then after a few of those we finally did our first dive. As you can see from the look on my face, I basically was a child again. I couldn’t stop smiling for the entire trip! It was a huge rush being under water! The shark could also jump out of the water as well which was pretty neat.
While the Hydro Attack shark was really cool and I really enjoyed it, I don’t think I’d do one again. It’s one of those experiences that you do once and then you kinda know what it’s like. The shark can’t really do anything but dive down, bank to the side, and jump out of the water. It was a really neat experience but also a touch pricey ($130). I had never seen any other way to dive below the surface of the water so for that experience alone it was worth it in my opinion. You can tell from my face in the pictures I was having just a little bit of fun! If you get a chance to try and it and have any interest I would definitely recommend doing it at least one time.
After the Hydro Attack we decided to take a walk around the botanic gardens that were nearby. We came across the fireworks barge that was setting up to do the fire works for New Years Eve. After going back to the house to relax for a bit we made our way back down to the Marina area that evening. We had a reservation at a restaurant and we were all looking forward to it. The food turned out to be excellent and was much better than the food Ashley and I were used to having on the trip so far!
After dinner we made our way to the house where we had the perfect vantage point over the harbor/marina area. We stood outside as the clock struck midnight and enjoyed the show!
