Cruising the Whitsunday Islands

Nearing the end of our time in Airlie beach we decided to take a day trip out to the Whitsundays.   A lot of people opt to do an overnight boat out to the Whitsunday’s but we were crunched for time and money so we decided to do a day trip.   We made our way down to the port and got checked in.    We quickly boarded and we were off to the Whitsunday islands.   It was around a 2 hour trip to get there but we made a couple stops along the way. We made our stops at various resorts and then made our way to Whitehaven beach.

Whitehaven beach is a supposed to be on the top 10 beaches in the world according to people who like beaches on the internet.   As we pulled up I didn’t really get what the big deal was about.  It was beautiful but just like any other beach as far as I could tell.   As soon as we stepped off our ship it quickly became apparent why this beach gets recognition.  The sand on the beach was the softest sand Ashley and I had ever stepped foot on.    If you want to know what it feels like, grab a bag of flour and stick your foot in it.  While I haven’t personally tried that, I can only imagine the feeling is exactly the same as the feeling you get at Whitehaven beach.

Ashley and I walked up and down the beach for a few minutes and then found a spot to set up camp.   We had about 2 hours here to relax and enjoy the sun before our ship departed.

After hanging out on Whitehaven beach we had a 45 minute boat ride to Hamilton Island.  Hamilton island is where the rich people go to get away from peasants and paparazzi.   While we were there Taylor Swift was on the island but unfortunately we didn’t get to see her.   There is one five star resort on the island and a private airport.   Our cruise stopped there for lunch and we had about 3 hours to check everything out.   Lunch was included in the tour if you went to a specific place so we made our way there.

The island is pretty small and we noticed that everyone had a golf cart.  Golf carts were essentially cars for the islands so everyone seemed to have one to get around.   We made our way over to the restaurant and the free food was actually pretty decent!

After that we made our way over to the resort area.  The resort was pretty huge and had a beach directly behind it where you could paddle board, wind surf, etc.   We decided to go to the resort pool and spent our time there relaxing and listening to the DJ they had playing.   It was a fun atmosphere and we were sad when we had to get back on the boat and head back to Airlie beach!
